Who was Stagger Lee?

Lee Shelton AKA Stagger Lee etched his way into American folklore for good on Christmas day in 1895 after he murdered Billy Lyons for stealing his hat.

Since then, Shelton has been mentioned in over 400 songs, including tracks by Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, Waring's Pennsylvanians, and The Clash.

Little is known about Stagger Lee the historical figure, but to this day, he's talked about as much as Mass Effect 5 rumours. Before the 1960s, most of these accounts detailed Shelton as a criminal, but since Stagger Lee by The Clash, many accounts have been much more heroic.
